Custom Content Class

This seems like a good place for this post.

Some of you may know that Thrill has been offering CC classes in addition to his Custom Content Tutorial (http://66.34.205.109/forme/index.html) at Custom Content Classroom in EA Land at 3PM CT on Saturdays.

The purpose of this thread is to give us a place to discuss class times, ask misc questions we didnt think of in class, to show off our new creations, and to let us know if you want to attend. I will be posting class times in the events forum, but not everyone sees them and I want to get as many involved as possible.

I hope everyone will learn CC. So far its not too difficult to make basic items, so if you dont think you can learn it come to class anyway and give it a shot. Thrill is a marvelous and patient teacher and we can all benefit from his creative genious.

We are working out the details of scheduling regular classes, at this point many of you seem to like Saturdays around 3PM CST. Can we get some feeback on if any other days/times might be better?

If you dont think you can do CC come to class and try it anyway. I saw this post after the last class, can you please tell me when there will be another one. I would love to do some cc but am clueless as to how to even start.

The next class will be on Saturday at approximately 3pm CST, the location has changed to my residence lot Shaman Sanctuary, owned by my other sim Monique Monet. I did post in EA Land events, but sorry I have been sorely pressed for time the last few days and havent had time to update here. The events post is also incomplete, but I promise I'll update with full details.

edit: Ok so I havent had time this week yet, I'm going to be starting a new sticky as soon Thrill and I have time to sit down and work out a schedule and determine class assignments. I am soooo ready to try cc, but I'm not sure what Sims program to buy since I only have the EAL download. Some people say Sims 1, some Sims 2. Some recommend expansion packs to go along with the version they like.

I think the more TS1 expansion packs you have the better, but the minimum requirement would be TS1. Have a look at Thrills tutorial (link in original post) and download the necessary programs after TS1, you'll be well prepared for class. http://boards.stratics.com/php-bin/shared/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Statues?? Were you able to learn how to make the statues this week and will you be hosting another class on making statues? You have no idea how I've been struggling to learn this and to see I missed the class, well frankly it just sickened me. We did practice recoloring a statue at the last class, so sorry you missed it. We will be having class this coming Saturday, I spoke to Toby yesterday about some class materials and were still working out the best way to help everyone. Unfortunately, my Windows Vista is not cooperating with the Sims game I bought, so I haven't even downloaded it yet! I'm sorry I missed it, but hope to catch the next one!

Yesterday I submitted my first chair. I had one copy made. I saw it in my inventory right away as 'not approved' I left the city soon after then came back to see nothing in my inventory. Should it have still been there or not until it was approved? The money is definitely gone still so I did pay for it...

Is this a good place to ask this? I already know how to make CC for Sims 1 as I made a fair bit for my offline game. The tutorial tells me how to do that but I already know that. What I need to know is what *specifically* do I have to do differently in order to make it compatible with Sims Online? Or is there no difference - just upload my game content I already made years ago?

Also, after uploading say 10 copies of it, and them being approved, are they in my inventory to use exactly as I like? After using that 10 do I have to upload the object again if I want more, or will they be in some sort of catalogue so I can sort of "buy" them in-game?

I'm no expert, but since we are using TS1 items as our base I think you should be able to upload your TS1 creations into the game as long as its a chair, statue or bitmap for making a sign or skinning (which I havent tried yet).

When you upload you can choose how many copies you want 1, 5 or 10 and you can always make more copies, havent tried that either yet but from what I'm told its an option when you (the original uploader) click on it...I'm sure someone can verify that. Once the items are in your inventory they will wait for approval, currently thats just Parizad so there may be a delay for approval, and then you can sell it at any store or through direct trade.

I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if I have any of this wrong, hosting the classes does not make me an expert in the CC field. Though I did make my first chair the other day...me so proud. http://boards.stratics.com/php-bin/shared/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thank you NikiKing - I now have to reinstall Sims 1 so I can look at what I have! I made opening/closing curtains which are decorative like a statue, but of course they are flagged as "attach to wall". Does this alone mean I cannot use them online yet? Or is it more to do with the fact that the BHAVs on the item (thus the Init) will not be run so it leaves only objects with default placement (which is Floor I believe) will work?

Nope... I filed a bug report. Everything else has shown up..if you go to our lot and find random stuff it's just me!

I'd try again but I'm worried it won't show up and I'll have wasted the simoleans again. I cleared the cache and everything with no luck.

And yes if you created the object and you click on it, you get the option to "Order More Copies" or something along that line.

I'm not 100% certain but I don't think you would be able to attach it to the wall just yet. I think it will just default to original placement.

Well I uploaded a chair to start with. TBH I was rather amazed at how much it cost me considering I had made it in the first place! It was worse than buying from a shop or the catalogue. Surely people making CC to sell are not going to be able to make a profit?

Yes, CC can be quite costly. Recently, I've been getting more people coming into my shop and shouting "Overpriced!!". I dont think they realize that many of my items cost over 1,750 each to upload / reorder, plus the time it takes to make the object.

Also, you can upload objects that are not sculptures, however they are stripped of all animations and behaviors. Through the upload process, the only thing that will remain is the base (1st) sprite and it's placement coordinates on the tile.

Well that answers any concerns I might have had about unique GUIDs and stuff - if the process is simply using the sprite resources from my file, it's just my artwork that is entering the online game, presumably attached to one of the four template chairs.

I think the pricing problem is partly that there is a small collection of very cheap items you can see in the Buy catalogue when you buy a property, which sets cost expectations too low. In fact I worked it out, and compared to a day's work in the robot factory, the cost of the CC furniture is approximately realistic. But they need to either reprice the items in the inbuilt Buy catalogue or do away with it altogether and force everone to buy through shops at market value.

As I have been running a site with free downloads for Sims 1 and 2, my intention had been to upload some stuff to the game and give it away for free, or at least just for what it cost me. But at this rate people are gonna say no thank you even if I am not adding any markup to it!

Would it be something to consider that maybe the initial object upload has a price to reflect the work Parizad has to do approving it, copies cost less, and there is some discount for copying in bulk? This would reflect a real life economical fact that the more an item is mass produced, the less valuable it becomes. That would enable creators to make some fairly cheap utility furniture while not taking away the incentive for players to pay a little more for a limited edition.

This sounds like so much fun! I have been making some scultptures from pictures, but I have not mastered it by any means. Hopefully I can catch a class in the future because I am so impressed by Thrill's work. Those cars are so cute, and I am sure there is many more amazing works there since the last time I stopped in. I have yet to buy a car...that is my next purchase...but everytime I try to stop by, the store is closed. One day I will catch ya!

well if nothing else this is bringing in old players. I just spoke with another "use to play" player who is once again becoming interested in the game with custom content being added. So i guess the class will be getting bigger on saturday.

Just want to let everyone know that I'm still trying desperately to recover from my major puter crash on Thursday, its severely messed up. Unfortunately I am still unable to download the game, sheesh I cant even download YIM, it took me 12 hours to install svc pack2 for heavens sake. I actually consider myself lucky to be able to read stratics, tho its so incredibly slow. For example it took 5 minutes to load this page just to make this post. I really dont know if I will be able to get in game by Saturday, if not hopefully someone can host the class for me? If anyone can volunteer please post here and let me know. I would really appreciate it.

DOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH no wonder i missed the class on saturday, guess I'll need to watch this a little more carefully. Then again the way i was feeling on staturday i don't think i would have made it anyway or paid much attention... ummmmm can we have a do over or a copy of the video tape on that class so i can watch it at 2am when i can't sleep due to this cold?

Yes Winston was 12 weeks old when a man beat him bad. He had 3 broken ribs, his back was broke in 2 places, his tail was broke in 4 places and he had a bad concussion.

They had him in the hospital for 4 months until the man was prosecuted and they did a lot of surgery on him. After all that they was going to put him down until I saw his photo and went to adopt him. I had to drive 6 hours to get Winston but I am so glad I did. Winston has so much personality and he loves people so how anyone could do that to a dog is beyond me.

I don't have the programs to do CC and I would like to find someone that would do it for me and I would pay them.

For the Custom Content Classes, adding them to the all-city calendar might help keep it in mind for everyone. The all-city calendar runs at the top of City Hall.

YES I think this is a great idea. I also think it might be a good idea to run a class or two occassionally in TC3 for the benefit of players who can't or choose not to play in EA Land. That is my primary city, and I have met alot of players that just say they won't go to EA Land at all for various reasons. It might be spreading you guys too thin to expect you to do classes in both cities. If anybody is willing to *train* me so I can teach others, and I don't have to hold an official position HERE to do it, then I'd be willing to sponsor classes in TC3. Niki or Thrill, are either of you willing to get with me and help me get something like this off the ground?

I am dying to learn how to make a CC sculpture and have tried many many times now to follow thrills video but everytime I try I mess up and cannot continue. I think it would be really helpful if the instructions could be written down somewhere for people like me that forget what I wanted to write down when I hit the pause button. I have done layering before with psp but its been a few years and the gimp is a bit different.

I have wanted to attend a CC class but something always seems to come up that I cant. Does anyone have the instructions for creating a sculpture written down that they can send me? I have emailed the address on thrills webpage asking for this and unfortunately they dont' have the instructions in text format.

There are a couple reasons why we stopped putting the class in events.

1: Now and then for some reason or another a class has been postponed after its been announced.
2: We've worked our way up to more advanced classes and it doesnt seem fair to beginners to try to catch up to where we are. As an example next week we plan to start on 3D which is quite advanced.

Potential solutions:

We at some point intend to offer beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. Our schedules are such at this point that its a challenge to hold one class sometimes.

We havent discused having more classes in TC3, but its also possible.

Currently I'm looking for a few roomies who would be willing to host classes when I cant be online and a few teachers to either do guest speaking or regular classes.

If anyone would be interested in these things please post what you would like to do to help. Carrie, if you want to learn to teach you may want to contact Thrill or Toby. I'm learning but dont really feel comfortable teaching yet.

The classes are held on a residental lot, so even free players can join in. It would be tons more convenient for us at this point to hold classes in EA Land only, because like I say we just all have insane hours. Of course if anyone would like to open a sister school in TC3 that would be just fine.

It took me about 50 times through the tutorial to learn to do it without, just takes alot of practice. I tended to pause almost constantly when I first started. Is there some specific part your having problems with that we can help you?

I will try to add a rewind button to the Video Sculpture tutorial soon. Hopefully that will help, but unfortunately there are so many steps involved that it became too long to make that particular tutorial into a text / screencapture format.

As Niki has mentioned, this Saturdays class (3/29) we will begin working with 3D to produce custom Tables, Chairs &amp; Sculptures. I am still working on a "easy-to-use" Blender 3D template as well as the tutorial, but should have it ready by Wednesday.

We plan on starting at 12 noon (PST) and expect to spend 2-3 hours for the class. See you all there!

Not sure what I am doing wrong but it seems to be when I get to filling the image with the fg color (yellow) then I go to the eraser to clean it up and instead of it cleaning it up with yellow I end up with white. I have tried hitting pause and writing down each step that is done but I think when I go to hit pause I am missing something that the pointer is clicking on. I am going to try cleaning up my image ahead of time with ms paint and saving it to the desktop as a jpeg already cleaned up and see if I can get further that way.

Do you have to type in the ffff00? Im suspecting maybe thats the problem. Gonna keep trying.

I attended this last saturday (well me and my pet purple monkey).
My main characters are Redraisin and Raisin. I will most likely be attending the rest of the classes anyway since it was really informative, and I like all these kinds of events. Now that we progressing, and Thrill gonna start with Blender (That im not so well known with), we should start at scratch again too, letting new players in to the learning. Start with basics again. We would need more teachers too tho.

Kinda hard with only the 3 of us. I know sat 29.march now will be hard, and long hard teaching for thrill, so I will be there, help him and the students and myself (lol) the best I can.
I have tried Blender, so I known alittle.

I would be willing to teach you all. I use photoshop and 3D Studio max to create objects.

I began by creating by hand in photoshop and moved into 3D around the end of 2001. I would be very happy to teach you all, but if you come to my class, be ready for the truth. If it looks ugly, I'm going to be bluntly honest.

Would love to attend some classes by Simfreak too!
Maybe you could have a class involving 3DSMax since the regular class is probably going for Blender?

I've added Toby to my yahoo, Niki you've been there forever but always show invisible/offline LOL but yeah I'd love to learn and I have sims that do not have a purpose yet in TC3 as well as EA Land. I could help out at designated times in EA Land, but I spend much, much more of my time in TC3 so would be there to answer questions between classes on a more regular basis. I'm very eager to learn and help out all that I can.

Those who missed it, you can do the tutorial on Thrill's page and do the same things in Blender that we did in class. It starts you off nicely in Blender.

Still interested in helping out with the TC3 branch of the operation.....I know Niki's having problems contacting me for some reason but I haven't heard back from Thrill or Toby either. Yes, it's on! Noon PST. I haven't heard back about this I was trying to set it up for someone, but let's just do it at "SimFreaks CC Center" in EALand? It's a Services place, so that should work. BYOCT (bring your own craft table...lmao) I got 3.

If you want we can have the class at the normal classroom lot and then go to service to upload. The main reason I like it there is its a residence lot so no greening. Im not sure what you mean here, but I think ur asking how to get it into the craft bench?
U have to copy the made chair .iff file from: C:\Programfiles\Maxis\The Sims\Downloads\Transmogrified

and into a made folder My Documents\EA Games\EA-Land\uploads\Chairs

I got the impression from talking to simfreak that she was going to do the TC3 part of things....she mentioned her sim Sleestak and that sim is in TC3 so that's why I thought this last class she had was in TC3. If that's not the case and there is still a need for a teacher in TC3, I'm still very interested in getting in touch with either you or Toby or Thrill and learning enough basics ahead to be able to start classes. My *target* was to start classes the first weekend in May, which with lot prices being down in TC3 is still doable, I just have got to get with one of you sometime either in game or through yahoo or somewhere to discuss how to get it going. Do we need to start a separate thread here to get a 'head count' of how many TC3ers need/want classes that havent' been before?

Are the class schedules written in stone or are they constantly changing?

I'm not one of the arrangers but they are usually on saturday(advanced) with Thrill or Simfreak, and sunday(beginner) with Toby, in EA Land, the time is noon or after. But it depends a bit if the teachers have time that weekend I suppose.
They'll announce it here.

If there are no announcements here I suppose nobody has a class prepared for that week.
So they are not written in stone, but usually at the same times.

I am still working on the class for <font color="blue"> TC3 </font> . Here's where things stand currently:

Happy Times Trendz has generously donated a crafting table to us, and I have a lot set up for the class with that one table, however I need to expand the lot to accomodate 4-6 people at a time, and buy more greening suppplies. I haven't gotten any in-game messages or messages here of interested people, so I need anybody who's interested in <font color="blue">TC3 </font> custom content classes to let me know. Tentatively I plan to start these in May, depending on interest and how quickly I can get that lot expanded and at least a couple more crafting tables. Hello, I have also been very busy, im a full time student at the college, and the final and examinations is on my back lol. I said probably 1 whole month, but they seem to change the finals dates alot, so most likely not more then 2 weeks.

Classes will start up soon again. Some of us have been and still is busy with real life work, studys and finals ect.

Speaking for myself, I should be done with finals in about 2 weeks if everything goes right. So then I will start up beginners to intermediate class, and do 3D Studio Max classes on request (only if you know the basics of using transmog and gimp/other Image editing program).
Also learning how to use the Sims Sprite exporter that Maxis made for us to use when rendering the bitmaps.

Will post on boards in good time before I/we start up the classes again.

I still want to take this opportunity to learn 3Dsmax. Life doesn't end here!
Those skills will be useful in the future, if we go to SL or if we do something else that requires it.
Some of the beginners will probably have lost interest in learning now, but the hardcore will be here until the end!

Also we can make some cc now and then and sell it cheap for other people's enjoyment. At least I will do that this summer.
